Kalamazoo Covenant Academy is hiring a Physical Education & Health Teacher and Student Mentor.  Must have Michigan teacher certification and endorsement in the subject (MA, MC, MX, or MB). 

Kalamazoo Covenant Academy is a year-round alternative high school diploma program for students ages 15-22. We are a mission-based school that meets students where they are, works to identify and eliminate barriers, and builds personal and meaningful parent-like relationships with each student. We offer half-day sessions, blended learning opportunities and personalized education plans to all youth who seek help, with a priority of concern and commitment to those who are most at risk and no other service is available. We will advocate with and on behalf of our youth to raise awareness in the community that all children and youth have the right to pertinent education, and to love, respect and genuine concern.

Job Summary:

The Physical Education & Health Teacher and Student Mentor is a dual-role position for a passionate and dedicated educator. This individual will instruct students in physical education and health while also providing comprehensive mentorship. The ideal candidate will build strong relationships with students and parents, foster a supportive learning environment, and guide students toward their academic and personal goals.

Key Responsibilities

Physical Education & Health Teacher (50%)

● Instruction: Develop and implement a comprehensive physical education and health curriculum that promotes physical fitness, healthy habits, and sportsmanship. Provide individual and small-group instruction both in person and online.

● Student Support: Establish and communicate clear expectations and guidelines. Work with students virtually via Google Meet and in person, creating a welcoming and supportive learning environment that is flexible enough to meet individual student needs. Establish rapport with students to encourage academic success.

● Progress Monitoring: Monitor student progress weekly to help them stay on track to complete courses successfully and on time. Grade daily assignments and tests, and approve final grades.

● Professionalism: Be informed of all school policies and procedures. Develop trusting relationships with all assigned students. Apply approved techniques for the ongoing assessment of learning. 

Student Mentor (50%)

● Student and Family Engagement: Build strong, positive relationships with students and their parents, serving as a primary point of contact and support. Provide weekly progress reports to keep students and families informed.

● Goal Setting and Tracking: Work with students to set weekly, monthly, and yearly academic and non-academic goals. Track progress daily to ensure students stay on track and celebrate their successes.

● Skill Development: Help students build essential soft skills, including communication, time management, goal setting, self-reflection, and good habits.

○ Connect students with teachers, administrators, and staff as needed to support their academic journey.

○ Help students discover their "Why" and explore post-high school options.

● Administrative and Support Duties:

○ Conduct student orientations, clearly communicating expectations.

○ Maintain detailed records of communication and student progress.

○ Assist with student registration and enrollment processes.

○ Activate and maintain student classes in the learning platform, including target/end dates.

○ Create and update Google Classrooms to keep students informed and engaged. 

● Team Collaboration:

○ Work as part of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and 504 Plan

teams, collaborating with Special Education teachers to meet students' unique needs.

○ Attend all required meetings, including professional development and staff meetings.

○ Serve as an advocate for students, ensuring their needs are met. 

Qualifications

○ Current Michigan Teaching Certificate. (Meeting Highly Qualified Status)

○ Ability to handle multiple tasks at once in an effective manner

○ Ability to analyze curriculum in accordance with established standards

○ Knowledge of best practices in grading student work

○ Works well with a team

○ Very strong customer service skills and strong communicator

○ Maintain a positive “can do” attitude

○ Expert knowledge in the use of assessment and assessment data to implement them effectively

○ Face challenges with the focus on creating a better educational model for our students

○ Be a self-starter and an independent thinker.

○ Technological skills, computer knowledge and ability to rapidly adapt to new technology (Chrome, Google, and etc.).

○ Demonstrate ability to plan.
